"Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Superman!"
Those words are well known to superhero fans around the world. Since his debut in DC's Action Comics #1 in 1938, Superman has perhaps become the world's best loved superhero. Sometimes called "the big blue boy scout," this American icon is known for always doing the right thing and making sacrifices to save people in danger.
He appeared in print and radio media at a time when the American people longed for a hero - they were in the midst of the Great Depression and soon to be drawn into the war that was raging in Europe. Superman is an "every man" - he is an orphan, a refugee, a poor boy from the country, and a blue collar worker trying to make it in the big city.
Superman was sent away from the planet Krypton, which was destroyed by the greed of the people who inhabited it. Superman derives his powers from the Earth's bright sun and disguises himself as "mild mannered Clark Kent, reporter for the Daily Planet."

His iconic logo has been said to be the shield of the House of El, his biological family on his home world. Other works have said that the "S" shape stands for "Superman" or for hope in the language of Krypton.
Whatever the meaning of this piece of pop art history, you can draw your very own Superman logo. All you need is a piece of paper and something with which to draw. If you wish to color your logo in its classic style, you will also need red and yellow crayons, markers, or colored pencils.
Notice that in each illustration of this drawing guide, the new lines are highlighted in blue. Sketch lightly at first, as you will be erasing many of your original lines as you go along.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing Superman's Logo
Begin by drawing an upside down equilateral triangle - a triangle in which all the sides are of the same length.
Draw a trapezoid on top of the triangle. Slant two short, straight lines upwards from the triangle's points, then connect these with a straight line.
Draw some guide lines. Cross the top line of the triangle with two short, straight lines. Draw a parallel line below the top line, and place a short, straight line perpendicular to each end. Draw a vertical line from the triangle's bottom point, and a short perpendicular line crossing it.
Draw four straight lines between the guide lines. You now have a diamond shape within a diamond shape.
Draw a straight line through the top left corner of the diamond, and another through its bottom point.
Draw a large oval in the middle of the diamond, slightly slanted.
Draw another, larger oval above and intersecting the first.
Draw four straight guide lines. One will cross through the large oval from the top right corner, the second from the top of the original triangle to the right of the inner diamond. The third and fourth will cross the smaller oval, connecting each side of the inner diamond.
Connect the guide lines crossing the smaller oval with a curved line. Draw another curved line on the top left of the lower guide line.
Erase the guide lines from the lower half of the image. Draw a curved line connecting the top of the original triangle to the uppermost guide line. Draw a small, downward facing triangle below the top guide line.
Erase guide lines from the upper and middle portions of the drawing. Draw a curved line to connect what remains of the small oval with the curve above.
Erase the guide lines.
Draw a vertical line from the upper right corner of the diamond to the horizontal line of the original triangle.
Erase the remaining guide lines. Be sure to leave a portion of the horizontal guide line to connect the short vertical line to the S-curve.
Clean up the drawing by erasing any remaining guide lines.
Color your Superman Logo. To color it in the classic style, shade the "S" and the outline in red, and the remaining space in yellow.
